Governing Body at Oxclose Community School:

Our governing body is made up of representatives from parents, local community (Community and Local Authority), staff (both teaching and non teaching) and the Headteacher.  Although we have this mixed group of interests we are a corporate body and have to adhere to the corporate decisions of the whole group.

We usually meet as a whole group twice a term.  The first of these meetings will deal with items from the Local Authority.  This business is usually items pertaining to changes implemented by the Government or Local Authority and we have to either make a decision or log the report for information.  The second meeting will deal with specific school issues, such as updates of policies or the progress the school is making.

To support this work we have sub committees such as finance, personnel, pupil discipline and complaints.  The minutes of all these meetings, once approved, are available to the public, unless we declare them to be confidential.

The role of the Governing Body is that of accountability to the parents and the wider community, including the LA and ultimately the Government.  We are accountable by agreeing and setting the strategic direction of the school with the staff by agreeing polices and procedures which will support this direction.  We demonstrate this accountability to parents by producing a School Profile and to the wider community by being accountable through OFSTED (Office for standards in Education) by facilitating a visit.  At the end of the day if a school is deemed to be failing the Secretary of State can remove the governing body.

To manage this process we employ a Headteacher and senior management team who manage the day to day business of the school.  We monitor the progress and the direction of policies through regular meetings where we receive reports and have the opportunity to ask questions.

In the event of a complaint not be being resolved by the school parents can contact the Chair to resolve the issue.  If that is not possible the GB complaints Committee will hear the complaint and their decision is final.

Our role, in short is to:
‘Provide a strategic view, act as a critical friend, ensure accountability through monitoring and encourage improvement of standards of teaching and learning'.
